Plan your marketing
before you spend a penny

For people who've never done any marketing and want to start. We go through the key decisions you need to make, what you can ignore, and give you a marketing plan to keep track of it.

This is a one hour webinar for people who run a small business and haven't got any marketing running yet. Business has come by word of mouth, you post on Instagram when you remember, and you've got as far as that will take you. You know you should be doing something more, but you've no idea where to start, and everything you read assumes you've got a dedicated marketing department.

If you google "how to write a marketing plan" you'll get mission statements, SWOT analyses, personas and the four Ps. But in a real small business things are more fluid than that. This hour is about what you need to have decided before you spend a penny on marketing, what you can ignore, and how to keep track of what you decide so it actually gets done.

It's run by the three of us at Awesome Tech Training. More than 6,000 people have come on our webinars and we have more than 220 5* reviews. It’s live, all three of us are on it, and you can ask us anything.

Who is this webinar for?

This webinar is for you if you run a small business or look after the marketing for one and:

✅ All your business so far has come by word of mouth and you're not sure how to turn it up when you need to

✅ You post on social media now and then but you've no idea whether it brings in any new customers

✅ You've been told to "do the marketing" on top of your actual job but nobody has explained what that actually means

✅ You've looked at how to write a marketing plan before but closed the tab because you can't see how the planning process is relevant to your business

✅ You've been on our free introduction to digital marketing webinar and you want to put together a practical plan that you can implement now

This webinar is not the right fit if you've already got marketing up and running and your question is about whether or not it's working. If that's your situation then our Is your marketing working? webinar is probably going to be more useful for you.

What you'll leave with

Not a finished plan, because nobody writes one in an hour. But what you will have is every marketing decision you need to make explained, along with a set of resources to help you apply those decisions to your own organisation. You'll get our marketing plan template including a couple of worked examples alongside blanks you can fill in yourself.

You'll also get a  tracker template, a simple spreadsheet of what you're doing, who's doing it, when, what it cost and what came in, with the examples' first month filled in and a blank month ready to copy; plus scripts you can use to ask for a review or a referral, your first email to past customers, your first Google post, and six things you can do this week to get your marketing moving.

What we'll cover in the hour

✅ What comes back when you google "how to write a marketing plan", and what a real small business actually needs instead

✅ What the business is for, in a sentence, and one objective you could be wrong about: a number, by a date

✅ How to calculate what one customer is worth to you (a rough estimate is fine) and why you need to know this before deciding how much effort it's worth to get a new one

âś… Understanding where you are now - key questions you need to ask about your own business and how it compares to your competitors

✅ Who you're for: one or two real customer types from your last ten customers

✅ The three things every piece of marketing needs to say, and the proof you've already got for each

✅ What you sell and why people buy it

âś… Understanding what's not worth doing, as well as what is

âś… Deciding who does what, even in a business of one, how many hours are realistically there, what you'll spend, and when to stop

✅ Getting a plan for the next ninety days on a calendar

✅ How to keep track of your marketing - the one number to watch, and the ninety day rule for deciding what to stop, double or change

✅ Completely at sea? Six things to do this week

Bring your questions

You can submit questions throughout the webinar and there’s time for live Q&A at the end. All three of us stay on the line at the end of the hour, so bring whatever you’re stuck on and we’ll do our best to help.

How the webinar works

The webinar is an hour of content with the Q&A on top of that. All three of us are on every webinar: one of us presents while the other two answer your questions in the chat as they come in, and we all stay on at the end. Everyone who books gets the recording, the slides and the marketing planning kit to keep.

If you buy the on demand version you get the recording of the last time we ran it live, including the questions people asked as its own section. You can ask your own in the comments under the webinar and one of us will answer within two working days, and you're invited to the next live run free of charge.

What happens after the webinar?

You'll be able to apply what you've learned to writing your own marketing plan using our marketing planning kit. We can also help you with dedicated webinars covering other aspects of marketing in more detail. Attendees get a special price on whichever webinar they book onto next.

Everyone who buys a webinar can book a free half hour clinic with one of us, and the plan is the thing to bring. In about three months, when there's something to measure, we'll invite you to Is your marketing working. And if you'd rather we set up the Google profile or an email tool for you, or you'd like an hour of one to one help with your plan, book a call with Rachel.

Why we're the right people to help you

We're Lorna, Steve and Rachel. Lorna has worked in marketing for nearly thirty years, almost always as the only marketing person in the business or one of two, across B2B and B2C, so she knows what it's like to have very little time or money but very high expectations. She also spent ten years teaching marketing at universities, which is where the textbook version comes from, and why we don't make you use it.

Rachel has spent her career in sales and business development, getting leads in for businesses and turning them into customers, so she's the one who knows which bits of marketing actually produce work and which just look busy.

Steve builds the websites and makes the technology behind the marketing work, which these days is most of the job. We run the marketing for our own business the way we'll show you in this hour, and we take on marketing for clients who'd rather hand it over, so none of this is theory.
